Semi Antique Needlepoint - petite-point
Size with frame 39.5" x 49.5"
La Dame a La Licorne
Large, sumptuous hand stitched needlepoint rendition of Everyday Life in the Middle ages, titled ‘La Dame a La Licorne,’ which is taken from a series of six tapestries that date from the middle ages, known as La Dame a La Licorne. In the margin of the canvas, visible on the back of the stretcher, you can see that it has been stamped, “Margot; Creation de Paris; La Dame a La Licorne.” The large rendition, measuring approx. 24.25” by 36.75”, has been exquisitely executed, stretched and framed in such a way as to create the sense of viewing something from a great fine art museum or private collection.
This particular piece was worked with the best wool available, done with patience and skill as you can see when you view the back, which is nearly as beautiful at the front, displaying the dedication and perfection of Mrs. Paul’s technique. The canvas was made in France and the selection of colors are simply stunning. The finished piece was signed and dated in the margin, April 14, 1974, before it was expertly blocked, stretched and framed in this magnificent gilt frame that sets off the work perfectly. This was a massive investment in not simply the time of the artist, Gloria Paul, but also in the materials used, the high quality tapestry yarn, dyed in the beautiful colors that grab the eye, playing off each other with the light and the subject matter creating a delight to the senses.
The frame has suffered some loss of gesso in the time since it was framed. Please see photos. The stretched area measures approx. 24.25” by 36.75”. In the frame, this measures approx. 38.25” by 48.5”.
Mrs. Gloria Paul was clearly enamored with Medieval times, and completed numerous needlepoint illustrations taken from the tapestries that would have been used to decorate rooms in European castles. You can see that she was inspired by The Lady and the Unicorn or La Dame à la licorne, a series of six tapestries woven of wool and silk in Flanders around the year 1500. The pieces can be viewed today in a round, climate and humidity controlled room in the Musée de Cluny (Musée du Moyen- Age), Paris. Mrs. Paul created other large needlepoint pieces that draw on the images of those famous textiles. We were fortunate enough to obtain some of them, which are listed in separate auctions.
Estimated shipping weight, (packaged) is 27 lbs 8 oz in a 55 x 45 x 6
